Calvey criticizes Senate, EPA for proposed rules changes; carbon could be listed as a "pollutant"

Kevin Calvey - Friday, June 11, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 11, 2010) — Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey blasted the U.S. Senate today for approving sweeping changes that would allow the EPA to classify carbon as a pollutant.

“This decision flies in the face of common sense,” Calvey said.  “The Senate is giving the Obama EPA the power to rewrite regulations at whim, allowing the EPA to change the law as they see fit.  With the global warming alarmists writing policy for the Obama administration, this could very well mean that carbon will be reclassified as a pollutant.”

Carbon is the main element in many fossil fuels, including coal and oil.

“This is yet another example of the federal government run amok,” Calvey said.  “Now the Democrats leading Congress have ceded the authority to write laws to an executive bureaucracy — the EPA.  Giving the EPA this much authority could be disastrous for Oklahoma and other energy-producing states.

“Classifying a fundamental element like carbon as a pollutant is proof positive that the federal government is completely out of touch with America.  Carbon is in the coal we need for electricity and the oil we need to run our economy.  And that’s not to mention the fact that carbon is in every breath we exhale as carbon dioxide,” Calvey said.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska offered a resolution to strip the EPA of the power to regulate greenhouse gasses, but the Democrat majority defeated the measure.  Sens. Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn voted to strip the EPA of the power to summarily regulate greenhouse gases.

“I thank Senators Inhofe and Coburn for sticking up for Oklahoma and for the American people,” Calvey said.  “It is unfortunate that the liberals controlling Congress and the Senate chose not to do the same and are ceding so much of their legislative power to the Obama administration.”

Calvey says no to more bailouts, criticizes U.S. involvement in Greek bailout

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, May 13, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (May 13, 2010) – Saying more debt is not the solution to a debt crisis, Republican Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey criticized the Federal Reserve for exposing the United States to the Greek debt crisis.

The U.S. is exposed to the debt crisis as the primary contributor to the International Monetary Fund, which is putting forward 1/3 of the $952 billion bailout.  The U.S. may be responsible for up to $54 billion in lost money if Greece defaults on its debt obligations.

“Has the Federal Reserve and the federal government learned nothing from our own disastrous bailout programs?” Calvey said.  “By rewarding irresponsible spending on the part of Greece we are only encouraging other countries to do the same.  There have to be consequences for spending more than you have and spending irresponsibly, or the taxing and spending will never change.

“This is like taking out a new credit card to pay off another card’s debt.  This cycle of printing money out of nowhere and bailing out every bank, company, and country that gets in fiscal trouble has to stop.”

Calvey said the administration is building a “financial house of cards” that could merely be prolonging the problem.  Many economists have criticized the bailouts and money printing by the Federal Reserve because it could lead to inflation down the road.

“Eventually all this debt has to be paid,” Calvey said.  “Instead of pushing the problem off on the next generation, we have to start making the hard decisions and cut the size of our overgrown government.  In Congress, I will work to balance our budget here at home and keep our government from bailing out irresponsible countries abroad.  No matter how hard it is to balance our books today, the problem will only get worse if we refuse to act.”

Calvey Pledges to Defund ObamaCare

Kevin Calvey - Wednesday, May 12, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (May 12, 2010) – Saying he would pursue any option to end ObamaCare,
Kevin Calvey pledged today to vote for defunding President Obama’s health-care law in
Congress.  Calvey was one of the first candidates to sign the pledge found at DefundIt.org,
committing to kill most of the ObamaCare legislation until it can be formally repealed.

“President Obama’s socialized health-care scheme needs to be stopped before it gets off the
ground,” Calvey said.  “I will do everything in my power to keep it from being implemented and
ruining health care in America.  I will continue my lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare on
constitutional grounds and if we haven’t succeeded by the time Congress meets next year then I
will vote for defunding and repealing ObamaCare.”

DefundIt.org is signing up politicians and voters across the United States to urge Congress to
defund ObamaCare as a first step to repealing the legislation.

“Although Speaker Pelosi and President Obama told the country ObamaCare would be deficit
neutral, it actually includes hundreds of billions in new spending,” Calvey said. “By defunding
this horrible program we can save the country billions and keep the government out of our health
care. I will continue to fight for overturning this unconstitutional overreach by the federal
government in the courts and in Congress.  The burdensome insurance mandate and other federal
power grabs will still have to be repealed.”

In his efforts to overturn ObamaCare, Kevin Calvey has filed suit against President Obama and
others in the federal government to keep the law from being implemented. Calvey also has
pledged to vote for repealing ObamaCare.

Calvey comments on speculation to end drilling incentives in Oklahoma

Kevin Calvey - Monday, May 10, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (May 10, 2010) – Republican Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey issued the following statement today regarding speculation at the state capitol that Governor Henry and legislative leaders are discussing an end to drilling incentives.

“In recent days, several leaders in the oil and gas industry have expressed concern about closed-door meetings possibly being held between the Governor and legislative leadership to propose the elimination, curtailment, or capping of state tax incentives for various types of oil and gas drilling.

“I hope these concerns are unfounded, and the Governor and legislative leaders are not seriously considering enacting such poor public policy. Oil and gas producers already pay far more than their fair share of state taxes, equaling about 25% of all taxes paid to the state. In addition to the taxes on income, sales, etc. paid by all Oklahoma companies, oil and gas producers have to pay an extra tax, the Gross Production Tax, that other industries do not have to pay.

“The incentives currently in place are necessary to investment in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is in competition with many other states, including Texas and North Dakota, that have lower finding costs, and in the case of Texas, a much stronger incentive program. Incentives currently in place are necessary to spur investment. Unlike many other state tax incentives, which give one industry or company a tax advantage over others, these incentives for oil and gas producers merely make the playing field a bit more even.

“At a time when the Obama administration is advocating raising our taxes by implementing Cap and Trade, why would Oklahoma beat President Obama to the punch and raise taxes on the energy industry? Curbing these incentives would have a very negative impact on Oklahoma’s economy.

“I call upon the state Legislature to reject any attempt to reduce, eliminate, cap, or otherwise curtail the very reasonable incentives for the high cost of advanced technology that is opening up new areas of exploration all over Oklahoma.  Raising taxes on one of the state’s largest industries is not the right policy move at this time.”

Calvey Condemns Democrats for Fundraising Off Oil Spill

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, May 06, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (May 6, 2010) – Today Kevin Calvey condemned efforts by the
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) to raise funds off of the recent oil spill in
the Gulf Coast.

“National Democrat leaders have sunk to new lows by trying to capitalize on a national tragedy,”
Calvey said.  “Setting aside that 11 Americans have died and an untold amount of damage is
being done to our Gulf Coast, the DSCC is focusing only on their pursuit of campaign cash.”

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee e-mailed to ask supporters to sign a petition to
“stand with President Obama to hold BP accountable” because the Obama administration has
vowed “to keep a ‘boot on the throat’ of BP.”  The petition leads signers directly to the DSCC’s
contribution page.

“I am calling on President Obama to denounce the DSCC’s exploitation of a national tragedy for
political gain and have his name removed from the petition,” Calvey said.  “It is bad enough
national Democrat leaders are capitalizing on this tragedy, but to use the president’s name to
amplify their message is even worse.”

The oil spill began when the BP oil rig Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20.  The spill is
believed to be leaking more than 5,000 gallons a day and oil has reached the Louisiana coastline,
threatening fish and bird species.  Initial estimates have placed the cost of cleanup at more than
$8 billion.

“All of our leaders in Washington, D.C., should be focused on cleaning up the mess and moving
forward,” Calvey said.  “Exploiting this disaster to raise money is beneath all standards of
decency.”

Calvey announces 2,014 new plaintiffs in suit to overturn ObamaCare

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, April 22, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 22, 2010) – Congressional candidate and lead attorney in a lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare, Kevin Calvey announced today that 2,014 people have joined his suit as plaintiffs in the two weeks since he filed.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Calvey said.  “We all knew the people didn’t want ObamaCare, but the fact that over 2,000 people are willing to go on record in court to overturn this terrible legislation is a testament to Oklahomans’ love of freedom and respect for our Constitution.  It is unfortunate that our attorney general, Drew Edmondson, refuses to represent Oklahoma’s interests in this effort, but I am proud of how many patriotic Oklahomans are standing up to this federal power grab.”

Two weeks ago Kevin Calvey filed suit in federal court to overturn ObamaCare. Calvey paid the filing fee himself and is donating his time and legal expertise to the effort. The suit claims that ObamaCare violates the Constitution by its mandated universal insurance coverage and other provisions.

“The president’s health-care law is an unprecedented attack on our Constitution and a naked power grab by the federal government at the expense of the states and the people,” Calvey said.  “Because our attorney general won’t take action to protect Oklahoma, I felt compelled to file this suit.  As time goes on, I expect even more Oklahomans to join our effort and stand up for our rights. Anyone who would like to join our lawsuit can do so at www.OklahomansAgainstObamaCare.org.”

Twenty other states already have filed legal challenges to the new law.

“I am confident that the courts will find ObamaCare to be unconstitutional,” Calvey said.  “Although Congress and the president have passed terrible legislation, we still have fundamental rights under the Constitution and more and more people are standing up for those rights every day.

“In November the people will get another opportunity to stand up for their rights and reject these power grabs.  Whether in the halls of Congress or in our nation’s highest courts, I will always fight against government encroachment on the people’s rights.”

Leading National Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Group Endorses Calvey

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, April 13, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 13, 2010) - Kevin Calvey’s campaign for Congress announced today that Calvey has earned the endorsement of Vets for Freedom, a leading nationwide non-profit, non-partisan organization of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.

Vets for Freedom is the largest Iraq and Afghanistan veterans’ organization in America.  Its mission is to advocate for success on the battlefield by educating and influencing the American public, policymakers and the media on issues of strategy, tactics and military leadership.

The pro-military/pro-veterans group announced its endorsement of Calvey after a thorough review of Oklahoma’s Fifth District congressional race, saying Calvey “will make an immediate impact on Capitol Hill, by adding a much-needed veterans’ perspective to crucial national security issues.”

Pete Hegseth, executive director of Vets for Freedom, commented about the group’s endorsement of Calvey.

“Kevin served our country honorably on the battlefield in Iraq and continues to serve in the National Guard,” said Hegseth, who also is an Iraq war veteran. “He understands the threats we face as a nation, and what it takes to ensure our war-fighters and commanders in the field — especially in Iraq and Afghanistan — have the resources, strategy and support they need to win. Kevin will make an outstanding congressman.”

Notably, as this endorsement was announced, Calvey himself is at Camp Gruber on orders from the National Guard, and is not available for comment.

Kevin’s wife, Toni, was excited to hear of the endorsement and made a statement on behalf of her husband.

“I’m so proud of Kevin for earning the endorsement of such an honorable group of soldiers and veterans,” said Toni Calvey. “The men and women who are a part of Vets for Freedom have served our nation valiantly. I’m thankful to them for their service, and for their support of my husband.”

Calvey Campaign Leads in Polls, Builds Momentum

Kevin Calvey - Friday, April 02, 2010
Oklahoma City (April 2, 2010) - In the last few weeks, Kevin Calvey’s campaign for Congress has built substantial momentum, positioning him as the clear front-runner to win the G.O.P. nomination.

With less than four months until the July 27 Republican primary, Calvey is leading all opponents in recent public opinion polling, he won a straw poll of key Republican activists and donors, and he has secured key endorsements from conservative leaders and advocacy groups in Oklahoma and across America.

The latest surge in momentum began with the release of polling information showing Calvey with a substantial lead over all Republican opponents. The scientific poll, conducted by independent research firm Soonerpoll.com, showed Calvey defeating all his opponents combined, with a more than two-to-one lead over his closest challenger.

To view the entire results of the poll, please visit http://soonerpoll.com/calvey-takes-early-lead-in-republican-5th-congressional-race-yet-many-remain-undecided-2/.

Following the release of that poll, a straw poll was taken among key Republican activists and donors at the annual Oklahoma County Republican Party banquet, showing Calvey with 47% of the vote among that group. The next closest challenger received just 15% of the vote.

Calvey’s conservative message and grassroots support has put him in a strong position to win the Republican nomination for Congress this summer.  Key Republican leaders and conservative advocacy groups have taken notice of Calvey’s message and his qualifications, and are supporting his efforts:

  - Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan
  - State Senator Jim Reynolds
  - State Representative Mike Christian
  - Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack, an outspoken defender of the 2nd Amendment
  - The Club for Growth, America’s leading advocacy group for fiscal responsibility
  - The Oklahoma Rifle Association, the state’s NRA affiliate
  - The Oklahoma Conservative Political Action Committee
  - Concerned Women for America, a leading pro-life and social conservative advocacy group
  - Iraq Vets for Congress
  - Chris Simcox, president of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, the nation’s premier advocate for border security and enforcement of immigration laws.
  - Del City Mayor Brian Linley
  - Del City Councilman Ken Bartlett
  - Former Nichols Hills Mayor Stewart Meyers
  - Former Oklahoma County Republican Party Chairman Steve Curry
  - Former Oklahoma County Republican Party Chairman Charlie Potts
  - Former Oklahoma County Republican Party Chairman Darrell Smith
  - Former Oklahoma County Republican Party Chairman Ron Wallace
  - Former Oklahoma County Republican Party Chairman Tom Dudley

“I’m humbled and honored to have so much support at such a critical time in the campaign,” said Calvey. “These conservative leaders, along with the conservative advocacy groups that are supporting me, will help me deliver my message of less government spending, lower taxes, and no more government-run health care. I’m very excited that the campaign is building momentum, and I look forward to meeting even more voters over the next few months.”

Kevin Calvey Dominates Republican Straw Poll in Fifth District Primary

Kevin Calvey - Monday, March 29, 2010

Oklahoma City (March 29, 2010) - Kevin Calvey announced today that his campaign has won a straw poll conducted by the Oklahoma County Republican Party at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner event. The dinner and vote was Friday, March 26.

“This poll says a lot about how our message is resonating with grassroots conservatives here in the Fifth District,” Calvey said. “The Republican party is as energized as I’ve ever seen it and our supporters are turning that energy into a winning campaign.”

In the poll, 47% of Republicans said they favored Kevin Calvey in the crowded GOP primary field.  The next highest campaign received 15% of the votes cast and 4% were undecided.

“This poll tells me that our party wants a strong conservative voice in Congress.  People are fed up with the bailout, they are angered by the new health care law, and they are sick of higher taxes and higher spending.  If elected to Congress, I’m going to do everything in my power to undo the damage that the liberals have caused.

“Winning the poll is very encouraging, but winning by 32% is a huge boost to our campaign,” Calvey continued.  “I’m going to keep campaigning hard for every vote until the primary in July. With the support of committed conservatives, I’m confident we’ll win the primary and the general elections.”

Calvey Unveils New Ad About the Disastrous Obama/Pelosi Health Care Bill

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, March 18, 2010

Oklahoma City (March 17, 2010) - Just as President Obama and his liberal allies in Congress are forcing a vote on the health care bill, Republican Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey has begun airing a radio ad stating his position on the issue.

Congress does a lot of bad things, but the Obama/Pelosi bill is one of the worst ideas weve seen in generations, said Calvey in the new ad. There are so many horrible things about this bill: higher taxes, more debt, taxpayer-funded abortions, backroom deals to buy off politicians, government getting in between doctors and patients. Its a complete disaster.

The ad is airing at a time when the liberal Congressional leadership is planning to force a vote on the unpopular health care bill. Speaker Pelosi has stated she wants a vote in the House by the end of this week, despite a host of polls that show Americans are intensely opposed to the bill.

Calvey opposes the bill, and has pledged to repeal it if it passes and he is elected to Congress.
