Calvey surges ahead in latest poll

Kevin Calvey - Wednesday, July 14, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 14, 2010) — A new poll from the independent firm SoonerPoll.com shows Kevin Calvey surging ahead with 27.8 percent support among poll respondents, beating his nearest competitor by 7.9 percent.

“Our campaign has been built from the ground up with the support of thousands of committed conservatives,” Calvey said.  “We are on a mission to take back Washington, D.C., and restore conservative government.  Conservatives are responding to our message.”

SoonerPoll’s first poll was conducted in March and also placed Calvey in the lead then with 19.9 percent.  With two weeks before the July 27 primary, 29.1 percent of poll respondents remain undecided.

“Our campaign is working tirelessly to spread our conservative message to undecided voters,” Calvey said.  “I am confident that we will maintain and improve our lead in these final weeks as more and more voters hear our conservative, limited-government message.”

The poll also asked respondents to name their second choice in the case of a runoff election.  Respondents who picked neither Calvey nor the runner-up chose Kevin Calvey as their second choice by a two-to-one margin.

Calvey refuses donation from CAIR executive director

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, July 13, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 13, 2010) — Kevin Calvey announced today that he is refusing a donation from the Council on Islamic-American Relation (CAIR) Oklahoma’s executive director, Razi Hashmi.

“CAIR is a hypocritical organization that sympathizes with Islamic extremists and I do not want to have anything to do with them or their money,” Calvey said.

On July 10, Razi Hashmi attempted to contribute $25 to the Calvey for Congress 2010 campaign online.  Calvey rejected the payment and did not receive the funds.

“I question Mr. Hashmi’s motivations for sending this contribution,” Calvey said.  “I have been very clear that I reject CAIR’s racist attacks on Israel and the support they have lent Islamic extremists.

“It will be our campaign’s policy to reject any contributions that we know come from CAIR or those acting on behalf of CAIR.  Until CAIR stops spreading anti-Israeli hate and begins working for peaceful understanding in the Middle East and at home, I will not support them.”

Calvey supports court decision overturning Obama’s drilling moratorium

Kevin Calvey - Friday, July 09, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 9, 2010) — Today congressional candidate Kevin Calvey criticized the Obama administration’s efforts to impose a six-month moratorium on offshore drilling as “callous political maneuvering” and applauded the courts’ decision to overturn the moratorium.

“The administration is trying to make political hay out of an ecological disaster to appease their left-wing base,” Calvey said.  “The only thing a moratorium will accomplish is to further depress the Louisiana economy at a critical time and make the U.S. even more dependent on foreign oil.”

The Fifth Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s decision to overturn the moratorium over the administration’s wishes.  Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has said that he will issue a new moratorium regardless of court decisions.

“If the administration wants to improve drilling safety, they need to clean up the corrupt Minerals Management Service and enforce laws already on the books,” Calvey said.  “Instead the administration is abusing executive power to halt an important sector of domestic oil drilling.”

Leaders in Louisiana, including Gov. Bobby Jindal, have criticized the moratorium and the negative impact it is having on the local economy, already in depression from the oil spill.

“I want the president to quit playing games with Louisiana and get to work cleaning up the spill,” Calvey said.  “It is basic common sense that we should do everything in our power to encourage safe domestic drilling for our energy independence and for our economy. The political games that the Interior Department and the Obama administration are playing right now put both goals in peril.”

Calvey defends Arizona, says Obama should focus on border enforcement

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, July 08, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 8, 2010) — Kevin Calvey is defending the Arizona law that makes being in the United States illegally a state crime and says the federal government should focus its efforts on border enforcement, instead of suing Arizona over the law.

“The left is in uproar over a state law that simply makes a crime out of breaking a federal law already on the books,” Calvey said.  “The federal government has been failing to protect our border for decades.  Arizona is simply trying to solve a problem that the federal government created and that the Obama administration is just making worse.”

The Justice Department is suing in federal court to overturn the state law on constitutional grounds.  Arizona Senate Bill 1070 makes being in the United States illegally a misdemeanor offense in the state.  The law prohibits local law enforcement from using racial profiling in determining the legal status of a suspect.

“The Obama administration attacking a state on constitutional grounds is outrageous,” Calvey said.  “This administration has shown a willful ignorance of the Constitution for its own legislation and now they are trying to punish a state for taking the initiative to protect our borders.

“Instead of tying up the state of Arizona in the courts, President Obama should be focused on finally protecting our borders.  Our immigration laws will continue to be ignored so long as the federal government refuses to enforce them.”

The federal government recently deployed 1,200 National Guard troops to the southwestern border.  Arizona had requested 6,000 Guard troops for enforcement.

Gun Owners of America endorses Kevin Calvey for Congress

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, July 06, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 6, 2010) — Gun Owners of America Political Victory Fund, a 35-year-old gun rights organization, announced their endorsement of Kevin Calvey for Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District today.

“I am proud to have the endorsement of an uncompromising, pro-Second Amendment organization like the Gun Owners of America.  The Gun Owners of America have been fighting for the fundamental right of Americans to defend themselves for a long time and I look forward to fighting alongside them in Congress,” Calvey said.

In their endorsement, Gun Owners of America praised Calvey for authoring the 2006 “Stand Your Ground” law, which removed a person’s “duty to retreat” in the face of criminal attack, and assured a victim’s presumption of innocence if he or she shoots a person who forcibly and unlawfully entered a home or vehicle.

“Like many conservative policies that we took for granted for too long, strong Second Amendment rights are under attack in Washington, D.C.,” Calvey said.  “Right now the Supreme Court is the only thing standing between law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment rights and the out-of-control federal government.

“We need representatives who will uphold our constitutional rights.  Like the Gun Owners of America, I believe that law-abiding citizens should have the right to bear arms for sport or self- defense and I will not compromise on this fundamental issue,” Calvey said.

Refusing to accept the status quo, Gun Owners of America are pushing to repeal unconstitutional gun laws that already are on the books.  Calvey said he also will push for expanded gun rights in Congress at every turn.

“If we are going to keep the fundamental rights that our nation has fought so hard for then we always must be on watch.  It is time to decrease government and increase our constitutional rights by upholding the Second and Tenth Amendments,” Calvey said.

Calvey releases statement on Supreme Court reaffirming gun rights

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, June 29, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 29, 2010) — Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey released the following statement on the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision reaffirming the right to bear arms for personal defense:

"I applaud the Supreme Court for siding with liberty and striking down the Chicago law that denied law-abiding citizens their Second Amendment rights.  The Court has rightly applied the Second Amendment to state and local governments to ensure that all Americans can provide for their own safety.

"The close nature of the Court's ruling, five Justices to four, shows that conservatives still have work to do to ensure our liberties. Whether on the campaign trail or in Congress, I will continue to defend our Second Amendment rights at every turn," Calvey said.

Calvey momentum continues in congressional race

Kevin Calvey - Monday, June 28, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 28, 2010) — Fifth Congressional District candidate Kevin Calvey continued his campaign’s momentum by winning the straw poll held at a Republican Party-sponsored candidate forum on Friday, June 25 with 47% of the vote.

Of Calvey’s competitors, the nearest garnered just 33% of the vote and all others received less than 10%.  Calvey led his next three competitors combined.

“This is another sign that our campaign is headed in the right direction for victory on July 27.  From the grassroots up, our message of bringing conservative government back to Washington, D.C., is resonating with the voters.

“I am taking my message to conservatives on the airwaves, in their communities, and at every event I can attend.  As we draw more conservatives to our cause, our campaign continues to grow stronger,” Calvey said.

Calvey also thanked his army of volunteers, who have been working hard on his behalf.

“I am very blessed to have dozens of Oklahomans volunteering on my campaign: retirees, homeschooling moms and their kids, small business owners, professionals, military personnel, Tea Partiers, and college and high school students have all joined together to put our campaign in the lead.”

The forum last Friday covered topics ranging from immigration to ObamaCare.  Calvey highlighted his lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare on constitutional grounds and pointed to his service prosecuting terrorists in Iraq. “We need proven fighters in Congress today, and I am a fighter,” Calvey said.

This victory comes after the Calvey campaign won a straw poll of the Oklahoma County Republican Party in March, also with 47% of the vote.  In addition, an independent scientific poll by SoonerPoll.com in March showed Calvey leading all his competitors combined.

“I am very confident about Election Day.  The voters will have the final say, and I will be contacting as many of them as possible between now and the primary election,” Calvey said.

Conservative Victory Fund endorses Kevin Calvey for Congress

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, June 22, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 22, 2010) — Kevin Calvey announced today that his campaign for Congress has been endorsed by the Conservative Victory Fund (CVF), an organization with more than 40 years of experience electing conservatives to Congress.

“It is a huge honor that the Conservative Victory Fund would endorse me as the conservative choice in this crowded primary.  I have worked hard to uphold conservative principles throughout my life and I look forward to working with CVF to bring conservative government back to the federal government,” Calvey said.

The CVF was founded more than 40 years ago by Congressman John Ashbrook with the mission to elect a conservative majority in Congress.  The CVF works to re-elect conservative incumbents and works to elect true conservatives in primaries.

“Our nation needs the CVF more now than ever.  Fortunately, Americans are waking up and realizing that we need a conservative majority in Congress.” Calvey said.

The CVF has been praised by conservative leaders like Sens. Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma as well as Congresswoman Michele Bachman of Minnesota and Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana.

Calvey said that the CVF has been critical to conservative successes in the past and will be a central player in the conservative resurgence this fall.

Calvey says fight over ObamaCare ‘isn’t over,’ vows to keep working for repeal

Kevin Calvey - Wednesday, June 16, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 16, 2010) — After House Democrats defeated an effort by Republicans to repeal the individual mandate in ObamaCare, congressional candidate Kevin Calvey said “the fight to repeal ObamaCare isn’t over,” and pledged to work to repeal the law in the courts and in Congress.

On Tuesday evening, House Republicans forced a vote to repeal the individual mandate portion of ObamaCare and were defeated 230 to 187.  Twenty-one House Democrats joined all but one House Republican to repeal the mandate.

“The individual mandate is the worst part of this terrible law.  Never before has the federal government forced U.S. citizens to purchase a product against their will.  I have pledged to overturn ObamaCare and I intend to see that promise through,” Calvey said.

The individual mandate has been criticized as unconstitutional by many organizations and states.  So far, 20 states and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) have filed suit against the federal government to overturn the individual mandate on constitutional grounds.

“The blatant disregard for constitutional government shows that the Obama administration and their liberal allies on Capitol Hill will stop at nothing to enforce their wrongheaded policies on the American people.  That’s why I have filed my own lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare and eliminate the individual mandate,” Calvey said.

More than 2,000 Oklahomans have requested to join Calvey as plaintiffs.  Calvey filed the suit personally in federal court when Oklahoma’s attorney general declined to join other states in filing suit.

“I look forward to joining a new conservative majority in Congress next year that will have the power to repeal ObamaCare and the individual mandate.  Until that time, I will pursue my suit to overturn the law and focus on winning my campaign so I can cast a vote against ObamaCare in Congress,” Calvey said.

Calvey campaign first on broadcast television

Kevin Calvey - Monday, June 14, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 14, 2010) — Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey announced today that his campaign is the first in the Fifth District Republican congressional primary to begin airing campaign ads on broadcast television.  In February, the Calvey campaign was the first on cable and radio airwaves.

“Our campaign is building momentum every day as we get closer to the primary election.  Conservatives in the Fifth District are responding to our message of limited government, personal freedom and national security,” Calvey said.

In the TV ad, titled “Trouble,” Calvey explains he is running for Congress “because our country is in trouble.  The Obama administration and its allies in Congress are taking our country down a disastrous path that few Oklahomans support.  I am running for Congress to stop them in their tracks.”

Airing ads on both cable and broadcast television will widen the Calvey campaign’s exposure to voters.  The ads are set to air on Oklahoma City broadcast and cable television for an indefinite period of time.

“I want to thank all the supporters who have brought our campaign this far.  Our campaign continues to grow and gain support because of the committed conservatives who have been with us since the beginning,” Calvey said.
